SAVL Juniors

General Information

The Norwood Bears Volleyball Club (NBVC) competes in the South Australia Volleyball League (SAVL) Junior competition (SAVL Juniors) conducted by Volleyball South Australia (VSA) on Friday nights during winter (school terms 2 and 3).

SAVL Juniors allows players to represent their club or school, with multiple divisions for boys and girls in various age groups: under 15, under 17 and under 19 (all determined by player's age at end of the calendar year).

Games are played weekly at various venues across Adelaide (e.g. Reynella, Brighton, Marion, Mt Lofty, Unley and Campbelltown). Game times vary, with the earliest scheduled start around 6:15pm (warm-up) and the latest finish time around 10pm. Each competing team is expected to fulfill duty requirements (for another match) on average every second week (i.e. 50% of games), with roles including top referee, second referee, scorers (2) and lines (2).

The highest/elite junior division is known as State League Juniors (SLJ).  The next highest is u19 Division 1, then u19 Division 2, etc.  NBVC usually nominates at least 1 team in each division.

NBVC is always looking for coaches and assistants - in fact, we depend on them!  We have plenty of support for parents who are keen to coach or assist with their child's team.  You can indicate interest on your child's nomination form, and we'll invite you to attend some information sessions with experienced parents/coaches during January and February to help get you started.  No prior volleyball experience necessary!  We generally discount junior fees or waive them completely for parents coaching a team or assisting (e.g. an assistant might observe and help out at training sessions then act as the team's official coach for matches).

2024 Season

The SAVL Junior competition season usually runs from early May until mid-September.  VSA has confirmed round 1 is on May 10th with Grand Finals on September 6th (SLJ only) and 13th.

NBVC will hold trials during February and early March for each gender/age division - dates/times to be confirmed. Nominated players will be invited to attend the relevant trial session(s) by email.

Following the trials we will allocate selected players to indicative training squads (e.g. enough for 2-4 teams) for a few more weeks, with final team selections expected to be announced around the end of March.

For those who are not confirmed in an SAVL Junior team, we will offer an alternative competition and/or skills training over the winter season - details are still being finalised.  If you do not wish to try out for SAVL Juniors, please check our website for other options which should be available from late January.

NBVC's 2024 SAVL Junior fees will be approximately $300 per player. You will receive an invoice by email for an initial payment of 50% to confirm and accept a team placement. There will be an additional charge (amount TBD) for a uniform (see details below).

This activity qualifies for the SA government's $100 Sports Voucher scheme (for children in school year 9 and below) - we will provide our own online form for you to complete before fees are due.

VSA Membership

All players are required to be VSA "Full" members before their first game (u18s should get the $75 Junior membership; those turning 18 this year need the $95 Adult membership). Please wait until your SAVL Junior team placement has been confirmed before joining or renewing VSA memberships. For information about memberships, please visit the VSA page:

NBVC is required to meet the uniform requirements as specified by VSA Rules and Regulations. In 2024, due to rule changes, some NBVC junior players will require new playing tops. Players selected to play SLJ may require the full senior playing uniform. More information regarding the uniforms will be available to selected players once details are finalised.
